"Ferret - a fashion Pet"

By: Raja & Pikku - Adapted by Patricia / translated by Markus

Before you gonna buy one of our species and after regretfully calling us "Fashion Pet", know a little bit more about us. Here are some infos about our species:

  • Ferrets (mustela putorius furo) : we are carnivors (not rodents), descending from the European polecat from which we were originally domesticated about 2000 years ago.

  • We are sleeping about 18 hours a day with every 4 hours (aproximatly) getting up to eat, going to the box, playing, and heading back to sleep. Will you accept our routine?

  • Our life expectancy is 5 to 8 years, but we can get as old as 10 years as well. Thus you have to prepare yourself caring about us for a long time. Don't abandon or sell us only because you don't have enough space in your family for us anymore. If you want us as your friends, please think before about family planning.

  • Don't look at us as an investment. We are no things you can sell anytime you need some money. Before you purchase any animal, think about the unexpected in life and count on it to happen, but don't abandon us. I believe for you it's an easy thing to do, but we won't understand it and suffer from your decicion to exclude us from your life.

  • We have a very strong smell, which won't even go away if you give us a bath every day (it can even get worse :-) ) even if we sometimes enjoy it. Sometimes we also miss our litter box. Do you think you can live with that?

  • While frightend or scared it can happen that we bite, sometimes we are even biting while playing but we don't have the intension to hurt you. Will you respect our space?

  • We need a lot of caress and attention and of course some time to play and exercice and can't be just locked away in our cage the whole day. Do you have this time for us?

  • We don't share the smartness of the cats neither are we submissed to you like dogs. You can't use us to protect the house, to go walkies with us in the streets. We also don't bring you your newspaper in the morning and are not good rat catchers anymore.  But we can give you a lot of love and happiness jumping and playing around in your house. Will you accept that?

  • To live alone for us is hell - who likes that anyway? We are animals who need some company. Will you please care about two of us?

  • We are very curious and always busy (when awake) and like to enter in every hole, scratch carpets and dig in flower pots. Can you ferret prove your house that I can live in safety?

  • Our costs (food, vets, vitamines, cage) are quite high. Can you afford it?

  • With a higher age the costs for us will increase. To sell or give us away will break our hearts and confuses us because we always got your love and were part of your family. Can you deal with extra expenses?

"Keep all this in mind before you decide to buy one of us just out of a mood "
